Meet Intern Cate Ferandin

June 2026

Meet architectural summer intern, Cate Ferandin from Kailua, Hawaii. Cate is starting her fourth year at New York University where she is pursuing a Bachelor of Art in Urban Design and Architecture.

Why did you choose architecture?

I chose to study architecture and urban development because I was exposed to construction sites and hands-on building projects from a young age through my dad. I spent a lot of time in his workshop helping build doors, cabinets, and other projects. Through those experiences, I developed a love for designing and creating spaces and gained an appreciation for the importance of architecture and thoughtful design. This inspired me to pursue a career where I can help plan and design cities and communities.

What are you most excited to learn this summer?

I am excited to have the opportunity to work for PVA this summer. One project I am especially excited about is building a 3D-printed model of a new development site on the North Shore. I am also looking forward to observing the wide variety of projects PVA is currently working on, including project site visits across the island, and master plan development meetings for the Ho‘omaluhia Botanical Garden project.

What project type interests you most?

I am incredibly grateful for the opportunity to shadow and work with so many members of the PVA team on a diverse range of projects. This experience will expose me to many different project types and provide so many valuable learning opportunities.

Why did you decide to intern with PVA?

I decided to pursue this internship because I wanted firsthand experience working in an architectural firm. PVA provides interns with exposure to a wide variety of projects and allows us to be actively involved in areas that interest us. The opportunity to contribute to projects while learning from experienced professionals to me is incredibly valuable. By the end of the summer, I know I will leave with a broad range of experiences and knowledge that will help shape my future career in architecture. I am so grateful to be able to work alongside the architects at PVA. Seeing projects throughout Hawaii will give me exposure to different project types, clients, planning processes, and phases of both commercial and residential architecture.
