Shaping communities through design excellence. The Hawaii Business article features outstanding entries in the AIA Honolulu 66th Annual Design Awards that shape communities through design excellence. PVA's Slice of Paradice is featured for a Collaboration Award for USGBC Hawaii Sustainability (Residential).
Each of the projects is assessed by the AIA Framework for Design Excellence. The Framework for Design Excellence represents the defining principles of good design in the 21st century. Comprised of 10 principles and accompanied by searching questions, the Framework seeks to inform progress toward a zero-carbon, equitable, resilient, and healthy built environment. Designers and clients are to thoughtfully consider these at the initiation of every project and incorporate them into the work as appropriate to the project scope.
Slice of Paradise excels across all ten measures outlined in the AIA Framework for Design Excellence. Beginning with design integration, the residence is crafted to harmonize with its context while embracing sustainability. The community benefits from the project's respectful treatment of historical artifacts (iwi kupuna discovered and re-interned onsite) and the transformation of an overgrown parcel into a valuable asset.
Environmental stewardship is demonstrated through the protection of the ecosystem via dune restoration and native plantings. Water conservation is prioritized by implementing EPS's water management budget tool for plumbing and irrigation systems. Economic and occupant comfort considerations are addressed by creating versatile, safety-conscious spaces, natural ventilation, and utilization of durable materials. Energy efficiency surpasses Energy Star 3.0 requirements, achieving NET Zero status and prioritizing occupant health through VOC-free materials. Renewable and recycled resources are incorporated wherever feasible, further enhancing sustainability.
Lastly, the design addresses Hawaii's power grid instability, ensuring reliability and garnering positive post-occupancy feedback. The pavilion is also set up as a hurricane shelter-in-place, safe room equipped for a multi-day storm, with a restroom and small kitchen. The result is a certified LEED Platinum, Energy Star, and EPA Indoor AirPlus home.
