Maunalua Bay Estate

Maunalua Bay Estate is a tropical retreat that seamlessly blends Balinese influences with Hawaiian sensibilities, creating an open, tranquil living experience. Inspired by the owners' years in Indonesia, the estate is designed as a series of interconnected pavilions that embrace the natural landscape while providing modern comforts. At the heart of the design is the "village" concept, where distinct structures are connected by covered walkways and lanais. The entry pavilion, featuring authentic Balinese doors and carved panels, sets the tone for the home’s rich cultural influences. Water is a unifying element throughout, from the re-landscaped natural spring-fed pond to the infinity-edge pool with floating stone steps leading to a serene poolside pavilion.

The program prioritizes an open yet functional layout, with a grand living area, high ceilings, and an integrated kitchen featuring an air-conditioned pantry and wine storage. The master suite and three additional bedrooms all offer breathtaking ocean views. Instead of a formal dining room, an oceanfront pavilion provides an immersive dining experience, while a cozy banquette adjacent to the kitchen accommodates informal meals.

Materiality and craftsmanship enhance the home’s character, with Balinese white limestone paving the lower level, octagonal hardwood columns lining lanais and walkways, and vaulted ceilings woven with natural fibers in key spaces. Large pocketing and folding doors dissolve the boundaries between indoors and outdoors, ensuring a seamless connection to nature while maintaining security and comfort.Thoughtfully designed landscaping, tall stone walls, and lush tropical gardens further enhance the sense of retreat, offering both beauty and privacy.
